The definition of literacy has in recent years undergone a series of changes. The expanding definition of literacy represents the efforts of teachers and educators to account for ongoing changes in the way human beings communicate, interact and share information. New definitions include computer literacy, critical literacy, visual literacy, cultural literacy and information literacy to name a few. It seems that in the world of information the only constant is change.
In many ways however, the fundamental principles that guide literacy instruction are the same. Teaching literacy empowers students to take action, to become agents of change in the world. Whether teaching 2nd language learners basic English or teaching high school students how to write HTML code the goal is the same: to teach students the skills they need to communicate, participate and innovate in an ever changing information society.
