First and foremost the library is an information resource for students, teachers and member of the extended school community. In addition to this traditional role school libraries are expanding the scope of their responsibilities to address the changing information needs of students, teachers and community members in the 21st century. |
Administration
The information resources housed in the library meida center represent an investment on the part of the school, a commitment to address the information and learning needs of the student population we serve. Conscientious administration of this investment is therefore of paramount importance to the school library media specialist. This includes both judicious management of existing resources as well as careful consideration when acquiring new ones.
School library administrators are responsible for developing policies and procedures regarding use of library resources and facilities. In addition, the school library specialist must work with faculty and administrators to develop long and short range plans for the school library media program. These include but are not limited to:
The cross disciplinary nature of the school library media program makes cooperation and collaboration a vital skill for the library media specialist. In addition to being an effective communicator, listener and facilitator, the school library media specialist must also take an active role in academic planning and school leadership. The school library exists to serve the learning needs of students, the instructional needs of teachers and the information of the school community in general. Our services and resources are therefore, only as effective as they are relevant to the needs of the school population.
